As we journey through life, the pursuit of wellness often evolves. A framework that effectively captures this quest for holistic wellness is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a topic I frequently reference in my videos and blog posts. Understanding these levels helps us understand a model of holistic health that encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual development. In this article, I will explore this concept and how each level contributes to our overall well-being.
Table of Contents
Physiological Needs
At the base of Maslow’s pyramid lies our physiological needs—food, water, shelter, air, and warmth. These are the most fundamental requirements we have, essential for survival. From the lens of holistic wellness, this relates most closely to physical health. Proper diet, sleep, and exercise, especially. This article covers these foundations of physical health, tying together the bottom of the pyramid with living a holistic lifestyle.
Security Needs
When these needs are met, we often move seamlessly to the next tier of the pyramid: security needs. Security, the adult equivalent of our foundational physical needs, includes safety, steady employment, and insurance. It represents our quest for stability in an ever-changing world. Having a secure environment enables individuals to build a foundation for health, laying the groundwork for higher levels of personal and professional success.
Esteem/Social Needs
Once our physiological and security needs are satisfied, we begin to focus on social needs. These needs encompass the sense of belonging from relationships with family and friends. A nurturing environment fosters emotional health, and when these social needs are met, we can concentrate more on building self-esteem. This is where the mental and emotional foundations of holistic health come into play.
Self-Actualizing Needs
Moving onto self-actualizing needs, we enter a realm focused on personal growth and self-awareness. This phase involves discovering who we are and what our life purpose is. Here, it’s vital to emphasize the significance of continuous learning—a passion of mine that I talk about a lot. The pursuit of knowledge offers countless free resources such as videos, books, and webinars that foster intellectual growth.
A critical component of self-actualization involves dealing with our past traumas and emotional challenges. Only by addressing these issues can we cross from the deficiency needs into the growth needs. Basically, we go from surviving to thriving. Once we achieve this stage, engaging in creativity becomes pivotal. This is why many people with mental health issues struggle with creativity; it usually can only come forth when we feel safe, secure and content.
Self-actualization and self-transcendence (next up on the pyramid) are closely correlated with the foundations of spiritual health.
Self-Transcendence
At the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy is self-transcendence. This stage shifts the focus outward, where individual growth translates into contributions for the greater good. This is when we can more easily get involved with helping others and sharing our unique gifts with the world.
It embodies spiritual experiences and a deeper connection with humanity which many individuals don’t experience until they reach this level of the pyramid. Unfortunately, people often dismiss spirituality due to their entanglement in the lower levels of the pyramid. When basic needs remain unfulfilled, spiritual growth appears distant and unattainable.
Updated Version

This is an updated version of the hierarchy of needs. I like this chart better is because this one divides the pyramid in half with the top being focused on growth and the bottom half focused on deficiency, which is the line where we go from surviving to thriving. It also includes a few more nuances in the top half.
Self-actualization is more of a self focused place to be where self-transcendence is giving your gift to the world and helping others with what your purpose is.
In Conclusion
The journey up Maslow’s pyramid is essentially a journey towards holistic wellness. The ultimate goal is to build a foundation so that we can reach higher levels of personal fulfillment. This journey underscores the belief that both physical and mental well-being are crucial to moving into the realm of self-actualization and, eventually, self-transcendence.
My entire message about holistic wellness and living a holistic lifestyle is all about building the bottom of this pyramid so that you can get to the top of this pyramid; it’s a journey. It’s the whole reason why we’re here.
