camping

Summer and healthy go hand in hand; and in this blog post, I will go into 7 reasons why camping is healthy. One of the most popular and beloved summer activities can improve our health in more ways than we are aware of.

For the audio/podcast version, listen here:

LOTS OF VITAMIN D. As you probably know, it’s better to get your Vitamin D directly from the sun rather than supplements. They work, but the sun also brings along with it a strong connection to nature. The sun is our life-giving center of our Universe, and feeling its warmth on your body as it nourishes you with Vitamin D is an amazing feeling everyone should enjoy regularly. If you are prone to sunburns, use sunscreen but it is ok (and recommended) to get 20 minutes a day of the sun directly on your bare skin in order to get the required exposure for Vitamin D.

-CIRCADIAN RHYTHM RESET. When you go camping for more than a few days, it starts to reset your circadian rhythm, especially if you camp in a tent. The combination of winding down every night with a campfire and the morning sun permeating your tent (or your camper windows!) help to gradually get your body used to the correct rhythm.

-WATER ACTIVITIES. Whether you are camped by a lake, an ocean, or a pool, most of us are more apt to do some kind of water activity when we are camping. Water is fun to frolic in, float on, and watch a sunset sink into. And bonus points if you have a sandy beach to wiggle your toes into. Not only does this feel amazing but the combination of water and earth is very grounding and helps you absorb free-radical-busting negative ions from the Earth! (Learn more about Earthing/grounding here)

-COMMUNITY. The camping community is known for being a helpful, friendly bunch. Bonding over your love of nature and recreational activities is fun and good for your mental health.

-NATURE. That one word says it all! Whether it’s a national park forest, a dry Arizona desert, or a busy family campground, one thing is for sure; nature is healing no matter what form it takes.

-STARGAZING. Looking up at the stars at night is something we rarely get a chance to do in our busy lives. When you’re camping, it’s almost a guarantee as long as you don’t have cloud cover. This is a great way to feel connected to the Universe.

-SIMPLE LIVING. There is a reason why many retirees sell their homes and live in their campers full-time. It’s a simple life with less possessions and more experiences, something we should all strive for. You can even full-time camp year-round if you work from a computer. There is also a thing called Workamping where you work at a campground in exchange for a free site.
